Thoughts on the Grammys by John M. Ellison IV
Y’know, I’m not gonna lie to you guys, The Grammys have been so lackluster over the years, I watch and don’t watch. So, this isn’t anything too insightful, just a few thoughts on some of the performances and moments from last night’s Grammys.
Cee-Lo dressed up like an android tye-dye turkey singing a bowdlerized version of his pop hit originally titled “Fuck You” with Gwyneth Paltrow surrounded by Muppets is something I regret missing the first time around. The performance was kind of Elton John-ish when you think about it. Not, in “that way” I mean literally when Elton John was on the Muppet Show back in the 70’s. Actually, the “Fuck You/Forget You” thing has inspired another argument I’ll expatiate on in a later article.
Mumford and Sons…No, not a fan. Also, doing a song about a noose around somebody’s neck is a STUPID IDEA during BLACK HISTORY MONTH!
Esperenza Spalding won Grammy for best new artist, “Who’s Esperanza Spalding?” Esperanza Spalding is what you coons wanted. She’s not Beyonce, plays that “real” music you claim to know and love and an instrument. Satisfied? No you’re not, because you idiots confuse the term “real music” with music that “you” like.
They didn’t mention Guru or Peter Steele of Type O Negative during the remembrance ceremony. Bastards…but they did mention Captain Beefheart. A bittersweet moment.
Canadian Art Rock band Arcade Fire won album of the year…at least they beat Lady Antebellum! But with Arcade Fire winning, two things happen hipsters revolt and everyone else asked “…Who’s Arcade Fire?” I’m not a fan of Arcade Fire but I’ve been familiar with them since like ‘06 I guess and apparently gained more of my respect than I realized. Apparently, I’m the only one.
Seriously, Arcade Fire winning album of the year was a shock though.
In closing, apparently real music did win, but you probably had the revelation that there’s a difference between real music and the music “you” like.

Indeed. : )
Although you said this article wasn’t too insightful it still brought up some valid points. I agree with you about the quality of the Grammys and award shows in general. On the verge of sounding much older than I am , I remember when I actually looked forward to award shows each year to see my favorite artists perform as well as seeing artists that I might not have been previously aware of. However, this is no longer the case. I didn’t catch all of the Grammys or performances. I did enjoy the performances I saw for the most part. Cee-lo has always known how to keep your attention ever since his Goodie Mob days. I also liked Janelle Monae, B.O.B & Bruno Mars performance. I thought it was a good throwback if you will to the perfomances of yester year. Now on to Esperanza Spalding winning best new artist. I knew exactly who she was & felt the right person won. For me it had nothing to do with her being the” anti Beyonce”, playing “real music” or anything like that. It is simply the fact that she is talented & stay true to herself not what will get her mainstream success or major airplay. Honestly, I didn’t know much about Mumford & Sons or saw their performance. Hearing from what you said what their song included it was racially insensitive & just in bad taste especially in this of all months. Also, I heard of Arcade Fire as well just not as long as you have. I think last night Grammys showed that by the artists that won awards that music isn’t always about a popularity contest, but rather about having actual talent & songwriting skills. It’s sad that some many of our peers & others stick to one particular genre of music or artists yet claim to be a true music fan. If you don’t like everything you hear you that’s fine. However, you should at least venture out from time to time.
Great points made, honestly, Mumford & Sons isn’t a racist band, just some English folk dudes and with a poor sense of timing and awareness. I was just being goofy. The fact that you knew about Arcade Fire puts you ahead of the curve in general.
